MY JOURNEY, SAJINPROGRESS, THIS IS MY STORY

HEALTHY CHOICES

I had to maintain a vegetarian diet during my treatment in India. My body had to go through a complete detox before I started treatment. They also recommended that I maintain a vegetarian diet for a month post treatment. I figured if I was going to be vegetarian for a month, I might as well become completely vegetarian. Since my body has been detoxed, I have noticed some positive differences; my body has felt lighter and my digestive system has been pretty smooth.

The problem with being vegetarian is attempting to make healthy choices, especially when it comes to getting all required nutrients and trying to stay away from all the processed alternatives available as non-veg replacements. I try to stay away from processed foods as much as I can. I also drink a lot of water, stay away from pop, and after my stroke, I completely cut out fast food.

Sleep is also important on the road to recovery. The brain must be well rested. It is equally important to keep your mind in a state of rest, without overworking it. I try not to stress myself over the little things. I avoid watching violent movies just because I have had seizures in the past and would like to keep my mind calm. I go to bed early every day, but the problem with that is that I end up waking up early as well.

I am not as active as I used to be, so I try to control my diet and stay in shape while being well rested. What has happened has happened, but that does not mean I should not take care of myself. Your body is your temple and you should take care of it and live a healthy life as you move forward.

I also have to watch something that is not violent at night because that is when my brain is on overload. I have trouble with it racing and anxiety at bedtime. I have done a lot of reading on that (internet wise) and it seems to be a problem among those that have suffered a stroke. I keep a bottle of Lavender essential oil next to my bed to smell for a calming effect as well, but I tend to watch decorating tv shows because they are calm and happy! LOL As for the fast food, I need to really work on that. I have cut back on pop and drink much more water then I used to do. I know it is so much better for me. I am on a challenge currently of walking one mile a day, no matter what. It already is showing my strength is improving – but I also am recovering from mono that I came down with in February. Keep on keeping on!
